MLK Day 2018 (movie and local events)
Jan 14, 2018

As we commemorate another MLK Day, AFSCME Local 2401 reminds members that Dr. King intrinsically linked civil rights with labor rights, the right to work with dignity for a fair, livable wage.

When he was assassinated in April 1968, Dr. King was in Memphis supporting the AFSCME city sanitation workers, who were striking for a living wage and safe working conditions (several workers had been killed on the job due to faulty trucks and equipment).  The night before he died, Dr. King AFSCME workers with his famous "I Have Been to the Mountaintop" speech.

Whether you are familiar with the story of the AFSCME Memphis sanitation workers strike, where Black workers stood up to soldiers' guns, bayonets, and tanks, or haven't yet heard this amazing story, please check out this incredible documentary "At the River I Stand".  You can watch it free by clicking HERE
