Members: You probably know by now that the Senate passed the federal budget plan, and there will be no federal government shutdown this time. However, the budget's plan for DC Government to make drastic cuts to services and workers may not go into effect. The Senate also passed a bill that would "fix" the federal budget plan and allow DC to keep its current level of spending. That bill still needs to be passed by the House and by the president (who reportedly is in favor of it passing). The House doesn't go back into session until March 24, so we won't know anything definitively until then. As of now, the Local hasn't been informed of any RIFs, furloughs, or other negative actions, and I don't anticipate we'll hear much of anything from DC leadership until that bill goes into effect (or not). More updates will come as we get them. rs
There are more District Council Performance Oversight Hearings coming up and Local 2401 encourages members to sign up and speak truth to power! Members can sign up to give written testimony, or to testify live in person or virtually on the day of the hearing. Local 2401 is organizing to help members write their testimony and keep our messages to Council clear and concise.
If you can't testify, please try to support your fellow Union members by showing up and wearing green in solidarity (more coming on ways you can give your support soon).
Please contact ruth.wilcox@afscme2401.org for more information.
This is a pivotal time for all organized labor, particularly the public sector Unions, which are under direct attack by this administration. What we as a collective workforce do at this critical time will reverberate through the rest of the next four years. Don't forget that ultimately it's US, the working class, who holds all the power if we wish to use it wisely. What we do NOW could determine the fate of Union Labor in DC today and in the future.
